THE COACHING PROCESS · YEAR 11 & 12 · GOLD COAST & ONLINE
A clear, selective process for families who want structured senior mathematics coaching — not ad hoc tutoring.
Quink Lab works with capable Year 11 and 12 students studying Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics. Before a student joins the program, Chris assesses their subject, goals, current performance and coaching readiness to determine whether the program is the right fit.
If the fit is right, the student begins a structured coaching cycle built around clear weekly direction, one-on-one online sessions, targeted feedback and assessment preparation.

THE PROCESS AT A GLANCE
Submit a short application with the student’s subject, year level, current performance and goals.
If the application suggests a strong fit, Chris will invite you to a short Coaching Fit Call.
SAfter the Coaching Fit Call, Chris determines whether Performance Coaching is the right fit for the student.
The student’s digital workspace is prepared, current school topics are reviewed and upcoming assessment priorities are identified.
Weekly one-on-one coaching begins with clear direction and targeted feedback.
As assessments approach, the focus sharpens around exam strategy, solution communication and consistency under pressure.
STEP 1
Quink Lab does not offer open enrolment.
The first step is to submit a short application so Chris can understand the student’s current situation before any coaching place is offered.
The application helps clarify:
This protects both the student and the program. Quink Lab works with a maximum of four students at any one time, so every place needs to be a genuine fit.
STEP 2
If the application suggests the student may be a strong fit, the next step is a short Coaching Fit Call with Chris.
The purpose of the call is to determine whether Quink Lab is the right environment for the student’s subject, goals, learning style and assessment timeline.
During the call, Chris may discuss:
This is a fit conversation. If Quink Lab is not the right option, Chris will say so.
STEP 3
After the Coaching Fit Call, Chris determines whether Performance Coaching is the right fit for the student.
The aim is not to place families into a higher package. Quink Lab has one core coaching program: Performance Coaching.
If the student’s assessment timeline suggests they may need additional support, Chris may also discuss whether Priority Support would be useful during a specific period, such as a PSMT, major internal assessment or exam preparation block.
Priority Support is optional, separate and only recommended where the additional access is likely to make a meaningful difference.
STEP 4
Before coaching begins, the student’s online workspace is prepared so sessions can be focused, organised and easy to review.
This may include:
This structure is important. Students should not finish a session wondering what they need to do next.
They should have a clear record of what was covered, what needs attention and how to continue working independently.
STEP 5
Each week, the student works one-on-one with Chris in a live online coaching session.
The session is not built around passive explanation. It is built around improving the student’s thinking process.
A typical weekly rhythm includes:
Chris reviews selected student work to identify patterns in thinking, errors, solution structure and communication.
The session focuses on the area most likely to improve performance: problem interpretation, method selection, mathematical reasoning, exam technique or solution communication.
The student works through targeted problems while Chris coaches the thinking process in real time.
The session finishes with clear direction for the week ahead: what to practise, how to practise and what to bring back for review.
STEP 6
Quink Lab does not wait until the week before an exam to begin exam preparation.
Assessment performance is coached throughout the program.
As internal assessments and external exams approach, the focus becomes more specific:
The goal is for the student to enter assessment with a process, not just content knowledge.
INSIDE A SESSION
A Quink Lab session is not a lecture.
The student does not simply watch Chris explain examples. They are actively coached through the thinking process required to solve problems independently.
A session may include:
The student should leave each session with greater clarity, not just more notes.
BETWEEN SESSIONS
The weekly session provides the coaching. The work between sessions builds the habit.
Students are expected to complete directed practice, review feedback and return with selected work that reveals how their thinking is developing.
Between-session communication is purposeful, not unlimited.
Students may bring selected work, questions or assessment concerns back for review so coaching can stay focused and productive.
Where Priority Support has been arranged, additional clarification or selected work review may occur between sessions during the agreed assessment period.
Students learn to ask better questions, identify where their thinking breaks down and take more ownership of their improvement.
FOR PARENTS
Parents can expect a professional coaching process, not a casual tutoring arrangement.
Quink Lab is designed to reduce uncertainty by giving the student a clear weekly direction and a structured path toward better assessment performance.
Parents should expect:
Frequently Asked Questions
The Coaching Fit Call is usually around 15 minutes. Its purpose is to determine whether the student appears to be a strong fit for Performance Coaching and whether any short-term Priority Support may be useful around upcoming assessments.
No. The call is a fit conversation. Chris will ask about the student’s subject, goals, current performance and assessment needs. If Quink Lab is not the right fit, he will say so.
Sessions are delivered online through live one-on-one coaching. Students work with Chris using a shared digital workspace, saved notes and real-time feedback.
Yes. Coaching is aligned with the student’s current school unit and QCAA assessment expectations. It is not a generic course running separately from school.
The student should have access to their current school unit outline, recent assessment feedback if available, and examples of work that show where marks are being lost.
Sessions are usually 60 minutes. The focus is on structured coaching, targeted review and clear direction for the week ahead.
Yes, especially at the application and fit-call stage. However, the coaching itself is designed to build the student’s independence and ownership.
START THE PROCESS
If Chris does not believe Quink Lab is the right environment for the student, he will explain that honestly. The application process exists to protect the quality of the program and the student’s experience.
If your child is studying Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics and you believe they would benefit from structured coaching, the next step is to apply.
Chris will review the application and determine whether a Coaching Fit Call is appropriate.
