How Quink Lab Maths Coaching Works

A clear, selective process for families who want structured senior mathematics coaching — not ad hoc tutoring.

Quink Lab works with capable Year 11 and 12 students studying Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics. Before a student joins the program, Chris assesses their subject, goals, current performance and coaching readiness to determine whether the program is the right fit.

If the fit is right, the student begins a structured coaching cycle built around clear weekly direction, one-on-one online sessions, targeted feedback and assessment preparation.

Application-based intake · 15-minute Coaching Fit Call · Weekly one-on-one coaching · Maximum four students

THE PROCESS AT A GLANCE

From first enquiry to structured performance coaching

1. Apply

Submit a short application with the student’s subject, year level, current performance and goals.

2. Fit Call

If the application suggests a strong fit, Chris will invite you to a short Coaching Fit Call.

3. Recommendation

Chris recommends the most appropriate coaching option based on the student’s needs and availability.

4. Setup

The student’s digital workspace is prepared and the current school unit is reviewed.

5. Coaching

Weekly one-on-one coaching begins with clear direction and targeted feedback.

6. Performance

As assessments approach, the focus sharpens around exam strategy, solution communication and consistency under pressure.

STEP 1

The process begins with a short application

Quink Lab does not offer open enrolment.

The first step is to submit a short application so Chris can understand the student’s current situation before any coaching place is offered.

The application helps clarify:

  • the student’s year level
  • whether they are studying Mathematical Methods, Specialist Mathematics, or both
  • their current level of performance
  • upcoming assessments or exam pressure points
  • their goals for the subject and ATAR pathway
  • whether they are ready for a structured coaching process

This protects both the student and the program. Quink Lab works with a maximum of four students at any one time, so every place needs to be a genuine fit.

STEP 2

The Coaching Fit Call is not a sales call

If the application suggests the student may be a strong fit, the next step is a short Coaching Fit Call with Chris.

The purpose of the call is to determine whether Quink Lab is the right environment for the student’s subject, goals, learning style and assessment timeline.

During the call, Chris may discuss:

  • what the student is currently studying
  • where marks are being lost
  • how the student approaches study and revision
  • whether the issue is content, communication, exam technique or confidence
  • which level of support may be appropriate
  • current availability

This is a fit conversation. If Quink Lab is not the right option, Chris will say so.

STEP 3

The recommended option is based on need, not pressure

After the Coaching Fit Call, Chris recommends the coaching option that best matches the student’s goals and current needs.

Some students need Core Coaching: a clear weekly rhythm and expert direction.

Others need Performance Coaching: more support around assessment preparation, solution communication and exam strategy.

A smaller number of high-achieving students may need Elite Coaching: the highest level of access and precision for top-tier outcomes.

The aim is not to place every student into the highest level of support. The aim is to recommend the option that gives the student the right structure at the right time.

STEP 4

Every student receives a structured digital workspace

Before coaching begins, the student’s online workspace is prepared so sessions can be focused, organised and easy to review.

This may include:

  • a personalised OneNote workspace
  • saved notes and worked solutions
  • topic areas aligned to the student’s current school unit
  • space for reviewed work and feedback
  • assessment preparation notes
  • weekly direction and follow-up tasks

This structure is important. Students should not finish a session wondering what they need to do next.

They should have a clear record of what was covered, what needs attention and how to continue working independently.

STEP 5

Weekly sessions follow a clear coaching rhythm

Each week, the student works one-on-one with Chris in a live online coaching session.

The session is not built around passive explanation. It is built around improving the student’s thinking process.

A typical weekly rhythm includes:

Review

Chris reviews selected student work to identify patterns in thinking, errors, solution structure and communication.

Coach

The session focuses on the area most likely to improve performance: problem interpretation, method selection, mathematical reasoning, exam technique or solution communication.

Practise

The student works through targeted problems while Chris coaches the thinking process in real time.

Direct

The session finishes with clear direction for the week ahead: what to practise, how to practise and what to bring back for review.

STEP 6

Exam preparation is built into the program from the beginning

Quink Lab does not wait until the week before an exam to begin exam preparation.

Assessment performance is coached throughout the program.

As internal assessments and external exams approach, the focus becomes more specific:

  • interpreting unfamiliar questions
  • managing time under pressure
  • structuring full-mark responses
  • deciding when to move on
  • recovering when the first method does not work
  • communicating reasoning clearly
  • practising exam-style questions under realistic conditions

The goal is for the student to enter assessment with a process, not just content knowledge.

INSIDE A SESSION

A coaching session is active, structured and focused

A Quink Lab session is not a lecture.

The student does not simply watch Chris explain examples. They are actively coached through the thinking process required to solve problems independently.

A session may include:

  • targeted review of previous work
  • correction of recurring errors
  • modelling of clear solution structure
  • guided problem-solving
  • QCAA-style exam questions
  • discussion of marking expectations
  • feedback on communication and notation
  • planning for upcoming assessments

The student should leave each session with greater clarity, not just more notes.

BETWEEN SESSIONS

Progress depends on what happens after the session

The weekly session provides the coaching. The work between sessions builds the habit.

Students are expected to complete directed practice, review feedback and return with selected work that reveals how their thinking is developing.

Depending on the coaching option, between-session support may include different levels of clarification and access to Chris.

The expectation is not endless contact.

The expectation is purposeful communication.

Students learn to ask better questions, identify where their thinking breaks down and take more ownership of their improvement.

FOR PARENTS

A calm, structured process with clear expectations

Parents can expect a professional coaching process, not a casual tutoring arrangement.

Quink Lab is designed to reduce uncertainty by giving the student a clear weekly direction and a structured path toward better assessment performance.

Parents should expect:

  • a clear application and fit process
  • honest guidance about whether the student is suitable
  • one-on-one coaching with Chris
  • a focus on Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics
  • alignment with QCAA expectations
  • structured digital notes and weekly direction
  • coaching that builds independence rather than dependence
  • clear boundaries around availability and support

The purpose is to help students become more capable, composed and independent mathematical performers.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions families ask about how the coaching works

How long is the Coaching Fit Call?

The Coaching Fit Call is usually around 15 minutes. Its purpose is to determine whether the student appears to be a strong fit for the program and which level of support may be appropriate.

Is the Coaching Fit Call a sales call?

No. The call is a fit conversation. Chris will ask about the student’s subject, goals, current performance and assessment needs. If Quink Lab is not the right fit, he will say so.

How are sessions delivered?

Sessions are delivered online through live one-on-one coaching. Students work with Chris using a shared digital workspace, saved notes and real-time feedback.

How long is each session?

Sessions are usually 60 minutes. The focus is on structured coaching, targeted review and clear direction for the week ahead.
